Tennessee Wesleyan head coach Billy Berry calls out 'mid-major programs' for reaching out to players

Tennessee Wesleyan reached the pinnacle of NAIA baseball on Saturday, bringing home a national championship. Head coach Billy Berry has another title under his belt, his third since taking over the program. However, this one was special as the Bulldogs beat Taylor University 21-3. This comes after a 49-15 regular season, meaning some great players are on the roster.

Well, some Division I programs are now looking to bring that talent to their own programs. And Berry is not all too thrilled with how things are being handled. He called out “mid-major” schools on Tuesday, saying they are directly reaching out to players. If this were to continue, Berry threatened to expose them on social media.

“Really appreciate all the mid major Division 1 schools reaching out too [sic] current players on our roster without contacting our staff first,” Berry said via X. “You all are a class act. If it keeps up am going to start putting your programs on blast for everyone to see on social media.”

Of course, Berry did not provide any further information on the matter. Exactly which players current Division I programs are after, we do not know. However, modern college athletics means it’s a safe assumption that they are hoping plenty of Tennessee Wesleyan players enter the NCAA transfer portal. Unfortunately, one of the prices of winning at a lower level.

College baseball moves into Super Regionals portion of NCAA Tournament

At the Division I level, the regional weekend is now over. The NCAA Tournament started at 64 teams and has now dwindled down to 16. They will face off in the Super Regionals this week, with eight lucky programs going to the College World Series. In terms of college baseball, not much gets better than this.

The No. 1 and No. 2 overall seeds are out of the dance. UCLA and Georgia Tech did not make it out of their respective regions, despite hosting. Now, the SEC holds the two highest-seeded teams remaining in the competition. Both Auburn and Georgia were able to escape, as they are two wins away from Omaha.

Friday, June 12, will be the official beginning of the College World Series. A national champion will be determined by June 22, at the absolute latest. The remaining 16 are fighting for what Tennessee Wesleyan was able to accomplish — a celebratory dog pile.
