Report: Steelers LB Nick Herbig to sign four-year, $100 million contract extension
Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Nick Herbig is set to sign a big contract extension after having a strong 2025 season. According to ESPN/NFL Network insiders Adam Schefter and Mike Garafolo, Herbig and the Steelers have agreed to a four-year, $100 million contract extension that includes $42 million guaranteed.
Nick Herbig has been with the Steelers since they drafted him in the fourth round in 2023. He was heading into the final season of his rookie contract and finished the 2025 season with 30 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, three passes defended, and three forced fumbles in 15 games with six starts.
The agreement is good news for Herbig and the Steelers. Before the deal, the former Wisconsin linebacker was holding in with Joey Porter Jr. during Pittsburgh’s mandatory minicamp. Herbig was in uniform on Tuesday but did not participate in individual drills during the media shooting period.

“Business is business. I’m a football player,” Herbig told reporters, per ESPN. “I’m here for football. I try to keep business separated from football as much as I can.”

Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy reacted to Herbig holding in. “When you break down the professional aspects of being in the NFL as a coach or a player, we all have contracts,” McCarthy said before Tuesday’s practice. “… In Nick’s case, he’s been in constant communication with us. I had lunch with Nick in March out there in Scottsdale. He’s done the things necessary, but he’s in a business situation. It’s no different than any of our players. I think you just separate that, and this is an important time in their lives. I mean, their business decisions and business opportunities can change the course of their life and their family’s life.”
Herbig has improved in each of his three seasons with the Steelers. During his rookie season, Herbig notched 27 tackles, five tackles for loss, and three sacks in 17 games with zero starts. In 2024, the 24-year-old tallied 22 tackles, five tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, and four forced fumbles.
