Reed Sheppard is too good for Summer League basketball
This is your friendly reminder that Reed Sheppard is good at basketball. Yeah, he wore that t-shirt one time, but it’s time to get over that. He is still one of the most popular players to ever grace the hardwood of Rupp Arena, and now, as the third overall pick in the NBA Draft, he is one of the Houston Rockets’ favorite players. He may not have played much in his rookie season, but he kicked off his Summer League with some serious “I’m too good to be playing in the Summer League” energy.
Sheppard’s stat line was something of a legend. He had 28 points, eight rebounds, four assists, four steals, three blocks, and six 3-pointers. This led the Rockets in all six of these categories.
Reed’s dominance included a ridiculous 9-0 run by himself in just 84 seconds, hitting back-to-back-to-back 3s.
The only downside on the night was that Reed pulled up lame in the final two minutes of the game with an apparent calf injury. Hopefully, it was just a cramp because Sheppard will be a centerpiece in the Rockets’ plans moving forward.

Houston traded for Kevin Durant this offseason, but they made it clear to the Suns that Reed Sheppard was untouchable and his services were not on the negotiating block. There still may be an uphill climb for significant playing time this season because Houston is going to be one of the top teams in the Western Conference once again and full of veteran talent. However, the team appears fully committed to Jeff and Stacey’s baby boy.
It is unclear if Sheppard will play again in the Summer League or if his calf ailment will limit him to one-and-done. If he is out, though, he’s proven enough.
