2024 LB Zach Smith commits to SMU
2024 Red Oak (Tex.) linebacker Zach Smith committed to SMU, he announced on Friday on the On The Pony Express YouTube channel. The nearby prospect was a key target for the Mustangs early on this spring.
Linebackers coach Maurice Crum and graduate assistant Warren Messer have built a strong bond with Smith, who officially visited SMU earlier this month.
“They were just excited that I was here and he was happy that I’m taking my official visit in June,” Smith said of his visit this spring for practice. “They were flying around making plays and being coachable, but I definitely seen them be able to have fun on the field.”
Overall, the community and family vibe around SMU caught his eye. He was on campus for multiple visits to the Hilltop this spring.

“The community,” Smith said of what stood out. “The whole community was out and family. That’s really special.”
Arizona State, Houston, Tulsa and Washington State rounded out his Top 5 schools.
As a junior, Smith notched 91 total tackles, nine tackles for loss, five sacks, five pass breakups and a forced fumble. He does a bit of everything for Red Oak.
On3 ranks Smith as the No. 153 overall linebacker in the nation and No. 214 overall prospect in the state of Texas.
