Reminds Us Of

Eric Berry
Eric Berry

TennesseeTennessee · HS Class of 2007
Kansas City2010 Draft · Rnd 1 · Pick 5

It's a lofty comparison, but Caleb Downs reminds us of Eric Berry - one of the best safety prospects of the internet recruiting era. Downs is an instinctive, very well-rounded safety prospect who makes plays all over the field, lining up on both sides of the ball. He has smooth cover skills, innate instincts and is a physical, fundamentally sound tackler in space. Berry was a dynamic quarterback at the high school level and had more verified athleticism with top track times at the same stage. The sizes are similar at around 5-foot-11.5, 195 pounds. Berry was longer with outstanding length (33.25-inch arms). Similar to Berry, Downs is a safe prospect with an extremely high floor to go with the considerable ceiling.

Personal Life

Caleb Downs' father, Gary, spent seven years in the NFL, so he knows a thing or two about what a good football player looks like. So, it speaks volumes when his father says Downs is blessed like few others. "It's like God just appointed him or anointed him with the ability to play football," Gary Downs told Fox Sports. "We saw it right away when he was six years old. He dominated then like he does now." Coming out of high school as an On3 Consensus five-star prospect, Downs earned All-America honors as a true freshman at Alabama before transferring to Ohio State ahead of his sophomore season. He racked up 107 tackles, two interceptions and forced one fumble in 2023. Downs is viewed as such an athletic weapon that he is open to playing both sides of the ball during the rest of his college career. "He can do it," Ohio State coach Ryan Day. " “We felt like in recruiting that I watched him play against Buford in a high school game, one of the best games I’ve ever seen. He was on both sides of the ball, he was returning kicks, he was running the ball, and I was like this guy can play running back at Ohio State. Like now.”
