Personal Life

Derek Stingley Jr. was one of the top prospects in the class of 2019, ranking at No. 3 in the retroactive On3 Consensus. He was the Gatorade State Player of the Year as a senior after starring in all three phases. His freshman season was one for the ages, with LSU’s website calling it “arguably the most impactful true freshmen in LSU history and the most decorated rookie in the history of the program.” He earned consensus All-American status, led the SEC in interceptions and passes defended and helped lead the Tigers to the national championship. He continued his success in 2020, earning All-SEC for the second straight year and first-team All-American from the AFCA. His father, Derek Stingley Sr., was a cornerback at Purdue before transferring and deciding to play college baseball. He was drafted in the 26th round of the MLB Draft. He played three minor league seasons before embarking on an arena football career. Stingley’s grandfather is the late Darryl Stingley. He was a wide receiver who was a first round pick out of Purdue. He was paralyzed in a 1978 preseason game after being hit by Hall of Fame safety Jack Tatum.
