Reminds Us Of

Derek Williams is a big-framed versatile safety who excels as a physical cover down defender to go with strong instincts, similar to what we saw from former Georgia star Lewis Cine. Williams is shorter than Cine at the same stage.
Team Predictions
Scouting Report
Big-framed, physical safety who plays with a knock-your-head-off mentality. Measured at 6-foot-1, 185 pounds with a 32.5-inch arm and 10-inch hand prior to his senior season. Has positional versatility on the defensive side of the ball as a back seven defender. Shows off his explosiveness and overall athleticism on the basketball court (one of the area's top players) and as a running back on offense. Flies downhill and runs the alley as good as any prospect in the 2023 cycle. Lines up as a corner, center field safety, down in the box as a backer and occasionally off the edge as a pass rusher. Tends to play in the box more than in deep coverage. Was kicked out to corner when facing top wide receivers on Friday nights and held up well in coverage. Has shown encouraging signs in coverage but still remains a projection there relative to some other top safeties. Should be able to tack on considerable mass once in a college strength program with his big frame.

Personal Life
According to New Iberia High School coach Ryan Antoine, Derek Williams is the rock his program relies on. “He's our All-American,” Antoine said. “Our leader in the secondary. We rely on him a lot for the defense, and he is the one who will step up and get it done for us.” Antoine says Williams is the type of player that leads by example. “He is a kid that came in here and worked his tail off,” the coach said. “He has the measurables and has the ability to be one of the greats to come out of Westgate. He has great genetics. He can play either safety spot and has a knack to get to the ball.” Williams has been starting since his freshman year in 2019 and followed that up with strong sophomore and junior seasons in which he really showed no real weaknesses in his game. “He is a student of the game,” Antoine said. “He’s been challenged a lot going against Division I talent every day at practice since his freshman year. He goes out there and makes plays and makes others better around him.”
