Dwight Phillips Scouting Summary
Charles Power
05/29/23

All-purpose back with true game-breaking speed as one of the very fastest prospects in the 2024 cycle. Measured at around 5-foot-10, 175 pounds in the off-season prior to his senior year. Has elite speed as a sprinter in track and field. Won the Georgia 7A state title in the 100 meters as a sophomore with a 10.43 second mark. Followed that up with a second place showing as a junior with a scintillating 10.24 second time. 40-yard dash has been clocked in the 4.2’s by college staffs. Transfers the high-end straight line speed to the field. Primarily plays as a running back in spread sets out of the shotgun. Uses his speed to beat defenders to the edge. More of a one-cut downhill runner between the tackles. Easily pulls away from defenders once at the second level. Has shown solid receiving skills out of the backfield and in 7-on-7. Will need to continue adding mass and strength to his smaller frame to be an every down back. May end up as a change-of-pace type who can move around in different roles at the college level. Can increase his production to be on par with most blue-chip backs. Has very strong athletic pedigree with his father being an Olympic gold medalist in the long jump.

Personal Life

Dwight Phillips is the son of 2004 Olympic long jump gold medalist and four-time world champion Dwight Phillips. Like his father, he is also something of a track star and ran several sub-11.00 second 100-meter times during spring of 2022. He won the GHSA Class 7A 100-meter state title with a 10.43 result and also posted times of 10.44, 10.46 and 10.49, according to Mile Split. However, Phillips’ coach, Leroy Hood, said his star player’s game is more than just speed. He said Phillips has put in the work and been willing to sacrifice for the good of the team as a blocker on multiple occasions in 2022. “He’s a guy that’s striving to get better every day in practice,” Hood told On3’s Jeremy Johnson. “He has a lot of tools in his toolbox. He’s just going to add to it. He picks up blocks. I’ve seen him take on middle linebackers blitzing and guys coming off the edge. I’ve seen him sacrifice his body to protect the quarterback. Early on that may have been a concern for some coaches. But as you turn on the film, he improved from game to game… The speed is a natural gift, but it’s those other things (that separate him).” As a sophomore, Phillips primarily played running back but also saw time at receiver, on defense and in the return game. He ran for 774 yards on 12.5 yards per carry with seven touchdowns in eight games. He also had nine receptions for 245 yards and two touchdowns and also ran a kickoff back for a touchdown.
