Jared Verse is a prime example of the transfer portal working in a player's benefit. Verse started his career at Albany, where he recorded 74 tackles, including 21.5 for loss with 14.5 sacks, 15 quarterback hurries, two forced fumbles and one pass breakup. Albany coach Greg Gattuso told The New York Post about a time reviewing film that he realized Verse needed to move to a different level. "The transfer portal was just starting, no one knew what it was or how it was gonna go," Gattuso said. "I said, ‘There’s no way he’s coming back.’ I knew we were losing him. He was the best guy on the field that day." Verse transferred to Florida State ahead of the 2022 season and went on to become one of the most impactful defenders in college football – racking up 70 tackles, 21 tackles for loss and 13 sacks during two seasons for the Noles.
