Personal Life
Raised in a village just south of Chicago’s South Side, John Michael Schmitz played his high school football at Flossmoor (Ill.) Homewood-Flossmoor. As an On3 Consensus three-star recruit, he was originally committed to Western Michigan but decommitted and followed PJ Fleck to Michigan. He started his first games as a redshirt sophomore and has been the full-time starter since the 2020 COVID season. He is the son of John and Debbie Schmitz. He has three siblings in Gabrielle, Hannah and Jack. Schmitz is engaged to Daniella Lucari, who he first met in sixth grade.
