Jonathon Brooks was ranked as one of the nation's top 20 running back recruits coming out of Hallettsville (Texas) High school in the 2021 class. During his senior season at Hallettsville, he rushed for 3,530 yards and 62 touchdowns and averaged 12 yards a rush. Brooks saw action in his freshman and redshirt freshmen seasons, but it was in 2023 that he emerged as one of the top rushers in college football. Brooks went on a streak during midseason that saw him top 100 yards against Wyoming, Baylor, Kansas, Oklahoma, Kansas State and TCU. His was honored nationally for the 218-yards and two scores against the Jayhawks, but he also had a key touchdown in the Red River Showdown against the Sooners. Unfortunately, his season was cut short after he tore his ACL during the Longhorns' Week 11 win over TCU. Before the injury he was named to numerous midseason All-America teams.
