Mackenzie Mgbako Scouting Summary
Jamie Shaw
03/14/22

It is all about the jump shot. The release is consistent, high, and soft. Mgbako steps into it confidently off the catch and his balance is right on. Then you see the positional size at 6-foot-8/6-foot-9 and you see the attraction. Past the jump shot, Mgbako attacks closeouts in a straight line. His handle is average, his hips seem a little stiff, and he is a slightly above average athlete. Despite each of these being a concern moving forward, the shooting and the confidence are very real traits here and he rebounds his area. Mgbako has consistently performed at a high level is big settings.

Personal Life

Mackenzie Mgbako describes himself as a 6-foot-8 wing who “can put it on the ground and push in transition.” After the 2021-2022 season, Mgbako was named to NJ.com’s All-State First-Team and was also named the Skyland Conference Player of the Year after averaging 19.5 points, 10.6 points and 2.9 assists. That combination helped him become one of the most heavily recruited players in the 2023 recruiting class and an On3 Consensus five-star prospect. Mgbako played originally at Gill St. Bernard’s, but he transferred to New Jersey powerhouse Roselle Catholic before the start of his senior year. He was joined at the school by his younger brother, Ethan. Before he transferred Gill St. Bernard’s coach Mergin Sina told NJ.com that his ability to do it all makes him special. “Obviously, he can play multiple positions,” Sina said. “He’s really learned to be more versatile, so I think that’s really going to translate to the next level.”
