Scouting Report
Athletic two-way star who can lead block and sack the quarterback. Lines up primarily as a 3-technique but can condense down to a shade over the center. Excellent get off and first step. Toolsy rusher who uses his hands effectively to keep his chest clean. Stands at 6-foot-4, just under 275 pounds and ran an electronically-timed 5.14 second40-yard dash, 4.58 second shuttle and 7.64 second 3-cone in the spring before his senior season. Shows off the athleticism on the offensive side of the ball catching passes in the open field as an h-back. Compiled 38 total tackles, 14 tackles for loss and 7 sacks his junior season. Strong at the point of attack and does a great job of anchoring and not getting removed from his spot. Threw just over 50 feet in the shot put and almost 130 feet in the discus during his junior track and field season. Likely has the highest long-term upside as an interior offensive lineman, but is being recruited as a defensive lineman. A high floor prospect who could step into a significant role the day he steps on campus. Father is Todd Van Poppel who was a first round selection by the Oakland Athletics in 1990 as a starting pitcher and went on to play in the MLB for over 10 years.
