Philadelphia2015 Draft · Rnd 1 · Pick 20

Johntay Cook's well-rounded game, large catch radius at his size and savvy in getting open against zone defenses reminds us of Nelson Agholor. Cook is more of a pure receiver prospect than Agholor, who was a two-way player at the high school level.

Johntay Cook II Scouting Summary
Charles Power
04/08/22

Smooth-moving receiver who is one of the best route-runners in the 2023 cycle. Shows the ability to tempo and toggle speeds within his routes. Has outstanding initial quickness and easily stacks corners off the line, particularly when working from the slot. Very polished having worked with individual trainers. Can win at all levels of the field. Has long arms with a 6-foot-4 wing-span at 5-foot-11.5, 175 pounds. Shows the ability to track the ball over his shoulder and has the capability of coming down with high-point grabs. Highly productive while playing top competition as a senior, catching 86 passes for 1,534 yards and 22 touchdowns while leading DeSoto to a state title. Quicker than fast, but long speed appears to be solid. Will need to continue improving on his reliability as a pass-catcher and eliminate concentration drops but showed some progress on that front as a senior.

Personal Life

Johntay Cook II is carrying on the tradition of star offensive playmakers at DeSoto, one of the top programs year in and year out in the Lone Star State. During his sophomore and junior seasons, Cook had more than 1,496 receiving and 28 touchdowns. He’s also a special teams star and averages around 15 yards every time he touches the ball. DeSoto coach Claude Mathis said Cook’s success comes as no surprise because he is a great route runner and a dedicated watcher of film. “He's one of those guys you enjoy while you have him,” Mathis said. “He can do so many things for us. He causes mismatches. He had a 99-yard touchdown pass. He has one of the quickest releases off the line of scrimmage. He's gotten faster because of track as well.” Cook loves to read and plans on majoring in either business or broadcasting. His favorite food is Chick-fil-A. His parents are Johntay Cook and Tracie Cook.
